About Ultrafino The Panama hat is a finely woven hat made out of toquilla palms on Ecuador’s Pacific coast. The finer the weave, the finer the hat. A hat that is considered to be of Ultrafino grade contains at least 600 weaves per square inch and takes about 6 months to make. When the company was started in 2003 the first hat ever sold was an Ultrafino grade Panama Hat. The name Ultrafino had a certain feeling of excitement, uniqueness, and quality. We wanted all of our products to radiate the same feeling of owning an Ultrafino grade hat. And so began Ultrafino Panama Hats. Ultrafino means ultra-fine in Spanish and it has become the raw definition of the company. Everything we do is aligned to the name. We strive to provide ultra-fine service while providing ultra-fine quality hats. However, we do this without putting social responsibility aside. Ultrafino purchases directly from the weavers, cutting out the middleman and allowing us to pay the weavers more to support their families. We strive to provide fair wages and conditions for those who make our hats, to treat them as the valuable part of the company that they are. We do not see them as workers, we see them as talented artisans. And we see us as promoters who help share their art with the rest of the world. It is one of Ultrafino’s goal to create a company where everyday purchases can have a positive impact on the world. Especially, to the Ecuadorian communities where the artisans live. The Future The core values of Ultrafino are trust, integrity, quality, and social responsibility. We believe it is important to know where your money is going and who is benefiting from your purchase. Our goal is to provide high-quality headwear while improving the lives of those who made the product. Weaving is an art that is unfortunately dying. We at Ultrafino feel passionate about the conservation of this art. The introduction of automated machines and the push for lowering cost is what is destroying this art. By continuing to show demand for handwoven Panama Hats, Ultrafino gives incentives for the weavers to continue weaving and continue showing younger generations how to weave. Effectively, this is the main reason hand weaving is still around and why it will continue to be around. Ultrafino was founded on the idea that every hat has a history, and if you listen closely it will tell you of the hands that carefully crafted it. We do not sell hats, we sell works of art with stories and rich history behind them Read more
This hat is very well made. It cost more than some hats but it was worth it. It is a very nice looking hat.Great looking hat and easy to shape with a steamerI was looking for a hat that would be cooler here in the Colorado summer than my Tilley Airflo, which I love, but which is a bit hot to wear in the full summer heat. Having worn the hat for 4 or 5 rounds of golf now, I am very happy with the Ultrafino. Much lighter than the Tilley, with far better ventilation. Moreover, the fit is excellent (my head is 23.5 inches and I have the sizeL/XL). Unlike when wearing the Tilley, I can drive at full speed in a golf cart without the Ultrafino blowing off my head. (Although in very strong winds the Tilley would be superior, due to its strap system...there is no chin strap on this Ultrafino.) One feature I didn't expect is that the exterior hat band can be tightened to adjust the sizing slightly tighter. So if you are between sizes, consider getting the larger size ans tightening the hat band. Craftmanship seems very good and in line with what I would expect in this price range. I have not tried packing this hat for an extended time yet, but have folded it slightly to tuck away for an hour or so without any problem. A very good hat for beating the heat, and sharp looking to boot! Finally found a hat that looks great and fits perfectly but best of all I fell good wareing it.My husband is very picky about what goes on his head. Mostly a ball cap wearer, he was a bit squeamish about donning his new Fedora. He finally stopped wearing it when we got into the car to go to the store; something like about 2-hours after he put it on. At the store, and after he'd gotten out of the car, on it came. He loves it.Here is his take on why the hat is great: #1: Fit; it's very comfortable and in the hot, hot sun of our US location, he's not sweating up a storm as compared t what he'd do in one of his ball caps.; #2: Form; he loves the "look" of the hat and the fact that it's a very soft, pliable straw. He says it's made very well (surprised him) and he told me he'd have no problem soaking this hat in running water, if needed, and then wearing it wet. He knew the straw wouldn't shrink any while keeping his head cool; #3: Function; It travels with him. He will scrunch it up into his hip or side pocket or into a camera backpack (we're amateur, but avid photographers), or his onboard luggage. Matters not. The hat does takes it. His advice: Get your own and enjoy!!!I bought this hat for a trip to the tropics where I would need to use it. Sensitivity to the sun assures that I use a hat for prolonged times in the sunshine. This hat more than did the job. After seven hours packed in a tight bag, I unpacked it, straightened it out, and wore it to dinner. It took about a full day to relax back to it's normal state, but it did fine. I wore it daily and still use it as an everyday. I'm going to order another one soon...one for packing and one for every day use.The instructions indicate not to get the hat submerged. I had it knocked off my head once in the Caribbean Sea and once it blew off while boating. I sprayed it with fresh water that evening and have not seen any negative results except a slight darkening, which is OK with me. Character!!I love the hat.At size 7 3/8 the hat fit okay but was perhaps just a little loose. I ordered a sweat guard insert pad and after installing that the fit was comfortably snug—absolutely perfect. It arrived faster than expected. It was scheduled for the 28th of the month and arrived today 23 April. It could be the anticipated delivery was cushioned, but it arrived in time and that's all that matters.I am a natural pessimist so I expected to find something wrong, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a product that had no visible flaws whatsoever. You can always get a hat adjuster, so go with the higher side of sizing. I just happened to know what I needed, and the measurement chart guide was right on target.Remember when you order it, it can be folded but not crushed, so don't expect to wad it up in your pocket and not get unwanted creases. There is a small guide included to tell the buyer this.
